Born and raised in London. Yes, I know what you are thinking. Tea and crumpets, fish and chips, the London eye. Sounds nice, huh.
But hang on a second. With British nationality, and Chinese ethnicity, an identity crisis may be caused. Yay!
Being surrounded by British culture on a daily basis blurred the Chinese culture from my family that I barely understood and had yet to embrace and love.
My time at Secondary school was a rollercoaster ride. I looked different compared to the typical British person living in London. Well, it’s not like I was a purple and yellow alien with spikes sticking out of my head. I would say my features looked different compared to most people at my school.
It was my dream to fit in, and be liked by everyone. Of course, who wouldn’t want that. I was ashamed of being Chinese due to racist comments, stereotypes and not being the ‘most attractive’ person as I looked ‘different’.
Here comes the best part! When K-pop was introduced as a trending music genre during my next few years at Secondary. Asian celebrities became more popular and I couldn’t believe it. I found it so easy to relate to them and became the biggest crazy fan girl. Yeah. Quite cringe. That phase of me is over now, phew. Anyways, onto the non cringe parts, I learnt many things and was drawn into things of my actual interests. I discovered asian fashion and makeup which was more suitable for me and allowed me to gain self confidence. Throughout the years, I unconsciously emerged more into the asian community and understood my own cultural background better.
To this day, I use Chinese social media platforms just as much as I use western apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok. I now think to myself, what an advantage to be part of both communities and cultures. Embracing the knowledge I have of British and Chinese culture, music and inside jokes.
