Video Production Annotation
For my video production content, I decided to create a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve a modern Chinese makeup look. I made sure it was visually informative and provided tips as well so that it is easy to watch and follow along.
As this is a makeup tutorial, it only shows a face rather than body too, but I still managed to get different shots such as close ups, as well as low angles which enhances and makes something stand out more (i.e the low angle was to show the curl of the eyelash after using mascara).
Although it was a challenge for me to do different shots due to only a face being shown, I made sure to include some creative editing such as making a tick off ‘list’ that walks through the video so that audiences can understand the basics to this style of makeup.
Audio Annotation
For my audio asset, I have invited someone who recently started learning makeup to share their experience and what they know about Chinese style makeup since that is the style of makeup that they aim to continuously learn and improve on.
Inviting someone to share their personal story and talk more about themself can make the content more relatable and captivating. This also helps the listeners visualize and better understand the concept of Chinese style makeup as a ‘newbie’ in a casual and informal way.
As well as mentioning topics of trending makeup looks and what they were like before they explored Chinese style makeup. I also found it important to ask what got them into Chinese style makeup, as many should know the benefits and beauty of trying out Chinese style makeup.
I think this audio has clear a conversation and is communicated well within the both of us but would be even better if there is sound effect included.
In the bustling and energetic streets of Shanghai, there lived a young girl named Mei Lin. She had always been fascinated by the art of makeup and loved experimenting with different styles. Mei Lin’s passion for cosmetics led her on a journey of self-discovery, where she would uncover the beauty and traditions of Chinese style makeup. As the sun shines brightly on Mei Lin, she strolls through the vibrant streets of the city and stumbles upon a hidden boutique tucked away in an alley. The boutique was renowned for its exquisite Chinese-inspired makeup, and curiosity sparked within Mei Lin. With a sense of anticipation, she stepped inside, eager to explore the secrets that lay within it. Inside the boutique, Mei Lin was greeted by a wise and experienced makeup artist named Fang Fang. Fang Fang had dedicated her life to preserving and sharing the ancient art of Chinese makeup. She possessed a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the cultural significance behind each brushstroke. Mei Lin’s love for Chinese makeup ran deep. She was fascinated by the rich history and symbolism behind each brushstroke. Fang Fang sensed Mei Lin’s enthusiasm and took her under her wing. She became Mei Lin’s mentor, guiding her through the intricate world of Chinese style makeup. Together, they embarked on a journey of creativity and self-expression. The first style Fang Fang introduced to Mei Lin was the “Gong Zhu” makeup, inspired by the elegance and grace of ancient Chinese princesses. Gong Zhu makeup emphasized flawless porcelain skin, achieved through a combination of light foundation and subtle highlighter. Fang Fang taught Mei Lin the technique of using a delicate brush to apply a pop of color to the cheeks, resembling the rosy glow of a cherry blossom. As Mei Lin’s skills grew, Fang Fang unveiled the enchanting world of “Shan Shui” makeup. This style drew inspiration from traditional Chinese landscape paintings, capturing the essence of nature’s beauty. Mei Lin learned how to blend shades of green, brown, and gold to create mesmerizing eye looks that mirrored the grandeur of mountains and rivers. With each passing day, Mei Lin’s confidence soared, and her passion ignited. She began experimenting with her own unique blend of Chinese-inspired makeup styles, combining the elegance of Gong Zhu with the natural elements of Shan Shui. Mei Lin’s creations were a reflection of her artistic spirit, capturing the essence of her cultural heritage. Mei Lin embarked on a mission to create a captivating video that would transport her audience to the mystical world of Chinese beauty. In Mei Lin’s video, she would guide them through the intricate steps of creating a stunning Chinese makeup look. With Mei Lin’s warm and outgoing personality, her enthusiasm was infectious. She introduced her viewers to the vibrant colors, delicate details, and harmonious balance that defined Chinese makeup. Mei Lin shared stories of empresses and ancient beauty secrets, making her audience feel like they were part of a grand adventure. But the true magic happened when Li Mei focused on the eyes. She delicately lined them with ink-black eyeliner, mimicking the grace and elegance of Chinese calligraphy. Using a vibrant palette of colors inspired by the natural elements of Shan Shui, Mei Lin painted magnificent designs on the eyelids. Each stroke of the brush brought the eyes to life, showcasing the artistry and creativity of Chinese makeup. Mei Lin’s exceptional talent spread throughout the city, and soon after, she became a talented and passionate makeup artist. Mei Lin had the power to transform ordinary faces into mesmerizing works of art with a heart full of creativity.
Creative Writing Annotation
For my creative writing asset, I decided to create a character whom many young people would be able to relate to. Living a normal and simple life with a passion or talent for makeup which could progress into something memorable and achieve many things out of it- Mei Lin learning her makeup skills at a more advanced level and turning her passion into a career which she can enjoy.
This could also be relatable or inspirational for people who would like to explore into a specific area (i.e makeup) to embrace their culture and cultural heritage with years of history.

Born and raised in London. Yes, I know what you are thinking. Tea and crumpets, fish and chips, the London eye. Sounds nice, huh.
But hang on a second. With British nationality, and Chinese ethnicity, an identity crisis may be caused. Yay!
Being surrounded by British culture on a daily basis blurred the Chinese culture from my family that I barely understood and had yet to embrace and love.
My time at Secondary school was a rollercoaster ride. I looked different compared to the typical British person living in London. Well, it’s not like I was a purple and yellow alien with spikes sticking out of my head. I would say my features looked different compared to most people at my school.
It was my dream to fit in, and be liked by everyone. Of course, who wouldn’t want that. I was ashamed of being Chinese due to racist comments, stereotypes and not being the ‘most attractive’ person as I looked ‘different’.
Here comes the best part! When K-pop was introduced as a trending music genre during my next few years at Secondary. Asian celebrities became more popular and I couldn’t believe it. I found it so easy to relate to them and became the biggest crazy fan girl. Yeah. Quite cringe. That phase of me is over now, phew. Anyways, onto the non cringe parts, I learnt many things and was drawn into things of my actual interests. I discovered asian fashion and makeup which was more suitable for me and allowed me to gain self confidence. Throughout the years, I unconsciously emerged more into the asian community and understood my own cultural background better.
To this day, I use Chinese social media platforms just as much as I use western apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok. I now think to myself, what an advantage to be part of both communities and cultures. Embracing the knowledge I have of British and Chinese culture, music and inside jokes.
